Description

BACE1 is the protease responsible for the production of amyloid-beta peptides that acumulate in the brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. The presence of 4 upstream AUGs (uAUGs) indicate an important regulatory role of this 5' UTR in translational control repressing the translation of its gene. The four uAUGs are responsible for low translational efficiency driven by BACE1 5' UTR and if the are mutated, the translation of its gene increased. Furthermore, it's note that a mutation on the second uAUG diminished notabily the translational repression.

This uORF has been characterized in human, and is also conserved in chimp, rhesus, mouse and rat mRNAs.
